The Internet has been and a great way to watch short films, particularly via YouTube. Now other sites, such as Vimeo, that have HD quality, are becoming the vehicles of choice for film-makers wanting to show off their skills. Internet allowing easy access to an audience and fan base has made it the main way young unknown directors freely publish there film on internet to get recogation. Of course, the problem of how to make such movies cost-effective exists, but, for consumers at least, there has never been a better time to seek out and watch short films.
The internet has been the start of many careers and it the promtion aspect of it is amazing because people can just embedded it in any social and some non social website instantly giving you free promtion. The only problem is getting first seen.
The internet is essential for short films because unlike feature film a short film is rarely shown in cinema so meaning it thier is little money init. So by using a site like youtube its not really none for money but it is done to get notice, even though top directors and amazing new ones can make money via sites like youtube by allowing ads to be in and around there video and page.
