Evaluation part 2.

Our editing wasn’t as problematic as we initially thought. We over came the problems that we had due to the dodgy camera. We over came other problems that raised by  being organized, instead of trying to fix each problem as it came we decided to first build a solid timeline. This then allowed us to focus more of cleaning up our shoots and fixing any problems. The other way we over came our problems was by being creative and using our knowledge of final cut to the fullest.

From the start of the project Shaakira and I wanted our film to have the feel of a match.com advert that included the slight of key colour it has. There was an effect we could just drop on to the clips; instead we had to spend along time trying to find the look we wanted through trial and error. We played with the glow, saturation, defocus and the brightness. After finding the right combination we had to vary for each clips which took lots of our time and sometimes we found ourselves spend a whole lesson on trying to get the perfect balance on a couple of clips.  

Throughout the editing process we both kept thinking to ourselves “will the audience get what we wanted to portray to them? Will they ending make sense?” We thought of various ways we could make the ending clearer. One that we came up is was to gets some still shoots of the robbers getting ready for the heist and showing them in between the titles but in a stylish way, which would fit the codes and convention of a heist film but we didn’t end up doing that due to time. So instead I thought it would make it clear to the audience that the robbers were running from the police by putting sounds of police sirens and distant helicopters. Something else we did in the editing stage was to put a wild track underneath our video, this important because it means that when we make cuts the sound wont sound jump or patchy.

The organization we did in our pre-production work helped a lot because it meant we had thing already prepared. Our sound board was vital because we were able to get permissions for one the songs we posted on our blog. We felt the song fitted our film perfectly because it was quirky and niche, it gives the feeling we wanted the audience to have that our film would be light hearted which makes the twist more powerful. To convey the fact that they were both in a trance, we faded down the robber’s voice and slow it down which divided opinions among the rest of the class. We also blurred the last few shots to make it clearer that they are unaware of what’s going on around them.

I think we worked will in the editing stage and in a professional manner. Before each editing lesson we plan what were going to do and how were going to do it which meant we weren’t just doing bits and bobs. I think I gave a lot of ideas to the overall project and did a lot in the editing stages to boost the quality of our film. Shaakira and I worked very well together because we knew each others strong points. I had most of the basic ideas, whilst Shaakira was able to actually get the ideas from head to the camera. Her role in the filming stages was the camera woman and whilst I was the main director. We were both able to put in strong input in to our film and none took over solely it was vey much a partnership. 

I think that our short film has it good and it bad points. I think that the colouring is beautiful and it gives the film a certain quirky feeling. I think the plot of the films plays the codes and conventions on a normal romantic drama and it has all the key elements of a good short film. I think we got loads of beautiful shots. One being the slow zoom in between the banister, the shot is well composed and the shades look exceptional. I think also that I casted the actor perfectly they suited there characters well and were able to give us a strong performance, like most short films we had to find the best actors we could with no budget which I think we did. The negatives of our film is that 1 or 2 of the shots we have look a bit dodgy and have problems such as minor shaking. I think the end can be perceived as confusing despite our best efforts to patch it up. There are some parts in the film which is very slow and can get a little bit boring; this might just be because I’ve seen it so many times. There is room for improvement which I think could have been sorted by having a few more hours at the library.

New scene

We are planning to film a short sequence which will go whilst the titles are going, which will be hearing a phone call between the robbers and see them packing equipment. The reason why i thought it would be good if did this is because it would wrap everything togethers and plus it will play with the audiences mind. I think that it is important to film this short section because it would make for a more complete short film which i would be proud to send to various film festivals.

Getting A Location (shaakira)

Getting A Location

Getting the location was one of my job and i think it was one of the hardest task i had to do, as our preferred location was a book shop and if we were to film in a book shop we would be making alot of noise and this was somthing alot of the owners were afraid of , i then whent to a library to see if they would be okay with it and i was told to get intouch with the southwark film council so i would film grove vale or dulwich library however as its a public place i was unable to film there but was told that i could film in kingwood house library and they would open it up on the day it was closed for us to film after I confrimed that that place i had to go online an fill out an application for a filming perment and then was told i had the all clear to film ..

Filming

We were given a license to film at the library at kingswood wood house, I found the actually location of the place shaakira got hard to find so i spent quite a bit of time looking for it. we arranged to meet 30-minutes before the actors so that we can have a plan what we want to do with the location. We looked around and found lots of places we could get good shots. We also rearranged the furniture so that we could get the look we wanted and also give the actors space move.

Most of our actors came on time but our lead male got the times mixed up and said he would be an hour late which was a big problem because we only had 4 hours to film.So we decided to try get some shots that we didn't need him in but it was very hard because he is in nearly all scenes.

when he finally came and we briefed everyone of what we want them to do, we then had problems with the boom mic because the end bit wouldn't stay still, so that took up more time trying to fix it. we then began filming the scene in which the girl goes to talk to the liberian. We had to get it for at least 3 different shots and angles so that we would have lots of options when editing. I had to fill in for this role because one of our actors pulled out so it was difficult because I wasn't actor, so it took a few takes for me to get it right. For the day Shaakira was the one mainly using the camera whilst I was on boom and directing it , the reason why I was given that role is because we both thought its better if the person if the person who came up with the idea should direct it.

one shot we got that we were proud of was the low angle slow zoom of the guy reading the book through the banister, I thought it looked well composed and framed. I few shots i felt went really well was the handheld shots Shaakira and I did, they were steady and the angles were unique. But our favorite shot of the day had to be the scene were they first start flirting with each other. I also thought the composition of the robbers coming in was fantastic.

Parts of filming which i thought could have gone better was firstly the scene of them walking around and flirting could have been better but we didn't have that many aisles to play around with and the space was very small so we weren't able to get a long scene or a variation of shots. I also thought that we weren't able to capture the whole robber scene to the best of our ability due to the time constraints  we weren't able to get everything done.

Health and Safety

These are things we need to do and have to makes sure we and our cast are working in a safe environment:

• Lights must be monitored at all times, kept away from materials and anything it can set alight, Make sure we read the manual, to work it safely 
• We need to make sure that all the wires for equipment are kept in a safe place so no one trips over them 
• Make sure our cast know where all the fire exists are in the location we are filming
• Make sure no fluids are near anything electrical 
• Have a working phone at hand just in case we need to call the emergency services
• Have a 1hr long break to make sure the actors are not over worked
• Make sure we all have access to clean drinking water and toilets
• We will also have short meeting with actors on health and safety, making sure they are able to work safely

Synopsis

Short synopsis: The film will be about a man meeting a woman in the book/record store, they begin to flirt then in the end there is a twist


The film begins with a young man reading a romantic book in the book store, as he is reading he notices a woman sittng next to him reading the book over his shoulder. Then this is where the match.com flirting style comes in. As he looks at her she looks away. He moves down she mover closer. Then he becomes intrigued by her . She starts to playful walk of around the shop, and the almost start playing hide and seek in a flirty way between the bookshelves. Then  man walks in to the shop unnoticed. As The flirting couple finally  finds eachother  they are about to kiss they are interuppted by a man shouting “everybody get down” robbing the shop.

The last shot is them holding hands hiding under the table

The music that we have up is kind of quirky but this not a defiantly the music we will use but just what we like

What our idea is based on?

After coming up with the ideas we thought we would gain inspiration from and we want to make our film in this style



The things we like about this advert its very unique and the flirting is quirky and almost cute. it may be diffcult to do this exactly because if we get dodgey shots then it will ruin i
We also like the music its would suit our film our idea perfectly.

we also like the movement in this film when they are flirting once again its very quirky and charming. the setting is great as well because its a weird thing to do in such a public place where and everyone seems oblivious.

Santa Barbara

The  Santa Barbara International film festival is a non profit film festival and organization, which show  cases independent films from around the globe. The newly expanded 11 days festival was established in 1985. The world Famous Arlington Theatre plays host to the first and last night of the festival. The Film festival is for feature films and is not genre specific. Films featured come from well known and unknown directors. The Festivals draws in many celebrities.

The festival location has a historic roots in the film industry. It was were the once struggling studio nicknamed flying a was located, it was built on a abandon ostrich farm. Once the film studio began to improve with the arrival of Samuel Hutchinson they started making alot of short films with the average time 14minutes. The film company eventually got bigger and bigger until the great depression came and they had to close there doors.

Since the many famous films such as Sea biscuit and of mice and men have been has been made in the same area

The 10-10-10 feature of a the festival gives 10 students the chance to make a ten minute films which will be featured in the festival. Which is good because it gives young people a chance to get in the industry

Setting atmosphere:

• cross in car which we don't really take much notice off but is symbolic in the end
• non diegetic sound makes it feel like it is going to bee a heist film
• The film is set in london
• All the rings on the drivers finger makes it feel like it going to be a gritty British "guy ritchie style" cottony heist film
• money for title makes it feel like it is going to have a key role in the whole film

Start of film:

• throws us right into the story and bulid suspense when she is waiting in the tunnel

Shots/editing:

• they use reaction and focus pull well in this film for example the part when she turns back in the tunnel waiting to see of Michael comes
• pov makes the audience feel like a part of the film
• they slow down the film in certain parts to build suspense

Character:

• Micheal seems to be the leader out of the to but seems like he is just trying to make her happy
• She seems to find a thrill out of stealing and finds it a turn on. the tattoo show she is rebel

Middle:

• when the start to use the water to clean themselves it is almost like it represents a spiritual cleanse
• The train comes from now where and seems like that it is a ghost train, the preacher that is preaching seems to be annoying people but also getting good reactions by others
• The man not accepting the money from the lady shows that the lady feels that’s the only thing they can offer her
• biblical the man washing the feet like Jesus and when Michael watches his feet, the light start flicker and then they become cleansed

Ending:

• the end of the film shows that the tube journey was like judgement day and the way se isn't allowed through is effective
• the style of the ending is different and the part when the drunk man is not allowed through clarifies everything
• We finally find that he is dead and at the end the gospel music is very effective
• I thought that the "heaven" bit could have been doing better

Genre:

• The director plays with out expectations of the genre of the film by putting  a great twist on it

Short Film Festivals

Short film festivals have been going on for many years know ranging from the as genre allowed to film specification. Short film festivals allows short film directors to connect with there audience and also to get critical acclaim. It acts as a springboard for new directors to get into the industry.

Short film festivals vary you can be at a festival with under 100 other people an go to another with over a 1000 people. You can find festivals for all types of shorts films and certain requirement needed like being a filmed on a video phones. This was done by the nokia film festival which required all film to be filmed on a video phone , which was done greatly by shane meadow.

Some of the biggest film festivals are the LA Film Festival and the London. The la fim festivals draws in crowds of other 1500  people.Whilst the london festival get over 6000 peopel

Short film festivals are vital because they offer directors a spring board to get into feature film making by showing production companies that there film style is liked by audience and critics alike. They also allow audiences to watch films they wouldn't normally see and a higher standard of some you could on the internet.

Avant Garde

Avant garde are sometimes viewed as cinematic poetry. The mainly abstract style endears and intrigues film critics; the films purposely avoid conventions of normal films and film narratives

The French term avant garde is translated as “ahead of the crowd” in English. So avant garde film makes strive to come up with new films ideas, dealing with subjects and the surreal which has never been touched on before. They experiment with sound, camera techniques and expressions making them as artistic as possible whilst leading a strand. So a avant garde film is characterized with a high a degree of experimentation, which a allows it to look different which often comes with a manipulation of the narrative primary compounds or sometimes a radical change from the norms / conventions of the current times.

David Curtis in 1971 popularized a new term for the films called “Experimental cinema” with the sense that the experiments to explore how the camera can emulate or enhance visual perceptions.

Most renowned directors for Avant Garde films is Maya Deren. The Ukrainian used some of the inheritance from her father to purchase her camera. She used this camera to make her first and best-known film “Meshes of the Afternoon” which is about a solitary flower on a long driveway, a key falling, a door unlocked, a knife in a loaf of bread, a phone off the hook

I dont really know what to say about the film except it is very weird and I don't really know how to anlaylis it.  The film obviously has a deeper meaning than what we see.

As a powerful self promoter, Deren did many things to support avant garde. she  wrote articles and books, made avantgarde films, helt "lecture study demonstrations". She even created a scholarship for experimental and avant garde filmmakers, called Creative Film Foundatiom.He post war effort were instrumental in drawing out other avant garde film directors.
